This scheme was launched formally on October 3, 2024, by the government of India. Earlier, it was mentioned during the central budget presented to the parliament by the finance minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman. This is a pilot program bringing together the government and top 500 corporate companies to provide internships to the youth. Young individuals aged between 21 and 24 can enrol and get into the internship pertaining to their specialisation or field. Aims and Objectives
The Prime Minister Internship Scheme serves as a flagship initiative, providing opportunities for over one crore individuals to acquire skills and gain insight into the workings of large corporations. Eligibility Criteria
- Candidate must be an Indian citizen.
- The age of the candidate must be between 21 and 24.
- The candidate must not be engaged in a full-time employment or education course.
Mandatory Educational Qualification
The candidate must possess the mandatory educational qualification in order to apply under the Prime Minister Internship scheme. Qualification encompasses Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or its equivalent, Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or its equivalent, or holding a certificate from an Industrial Training Institute (ITI), a diploma from a Polytechnic Institute, or a graduation degree such as BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BCA, BBA, B.Pharma, etc.

Who are not eligible?
You are not eligible for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme if any of the following conditions apply to you.
- Age is either below 21 years or above 24 years.
- Currently engaged in a full-time employment.
- Currently engaged in a full-time education.
- Having received education from reputed institutes such as IITs, IIMs, National Law Universities, IISER, NIDs, or IIITs.
- Having a qualification such as a CA, CMA, CS, MBBS, BDS, MBA, PhD, or any master’s or higher degree (recognised by the UGC).
- Already enrolled in any skill, apprenticeship, internship, or training program under a Central or State Government scheme.
- Have completed apprenticeship under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) or National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS).
- Having a family income exceeding INR 8.00 lacs. (income calculation for 2023-24)
- Any family member is a government employee working as a permanent/regular government employee (excluding contractual employees). “Government” includes central and state governments, union territory administrations, central and state public sector undertakings (PSUs), statutory organisations, and local bodies.
Note 1: Family means self, parents, and spouse.
Note 2: Candidates enrolled in an online/distance/correspondence course are eligible for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme.
Selection process under Prime Minister Internship Scheme
The selection process under PMIS will be based on the candidates’ preferences and the requirements of the partner companies. For the purpose, a fair, socially inclusive, and tech-driven process will be adopted. Before the selection, the candidates have to complete the registration and profile creation process on the official website of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme. Then thereafter, they have to download the CV and submit their preferences from the listed opportunities available on the portal. The following process will be done to make an appropriate selection.
- Based on the preferences of the candidates and the internship vacancies of the company, a shortlist will be prepared.
- Shortlisting will be done depending on the number of offers for each candidate.
- Approximately twice or three times as many names will be sent to the partner company for selection.
- Then thereafter, the partner company will take the necessary action and complete the selection process based on its own selection criteria.

The central government has included 25 sectors in the Prime Minister Internship Scheme. These sectors play a crucial role in running the economy of the country. Internship opportunities availability
Each candidate will have a maximum of 5 internship opportunities in one cycle. Candidates can request enrolment for 5 different internship opportunities based on their preferred location, sector, role, and qualifications/specialisation. These 5 preferences can be changed as many times as required by the candidates. If any candidate is not selected for any of the five preferences, he/she can make preferences for the future cycles of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme.
Employment scope
PMIS envisages the idea of providing internships only. The scheme aims to create equal opportunities for youth across various sectors to acquire practical knowledge and skills. There is no job guarantee envisaged under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme. Interns have to show their skill and prove themselves so that their partner company could provide employment opportunities to bright candidates. Bright and talented young individuals may receive job opportunities after internship completion.
