Ayushman Bharat Initiative came into force in 2018 and its implementation was done under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Initially, the government set some limitations over it on the basis of age and only senior citizens aged below 70 could get health insurance cover from it. Now with the extension of the Ayushman Bharat for senior citizens aged 70 or more, about 6 crores old age citizens will be able to get cashless treatment in any empaneled hospital across the country. Following are the key features of Ayushman Bharat scheme for Senior Citizens aged 70 and more.
- Under this extension, now, senior citizens aged 70 or more can also register and get their health card under Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
- They can register themselves under this health insurance coverage and receive up to 5 lacs health insurance coverage.
- This 5 lac coverage (Top-up coverage) will be over and above their family member limit of Rs. 5 lakh means, they do not have to share their 5 lac top up with any other member aged below 70 in the family.
- They can avail of their insurance coverage any time and in any government approved hospital across the country and their treatment would be 100% cashless.
- About 4.5 crore families with more than 6 crore senior citizens aged 70 and more will have up to 5 lacs health insurance coverage on a family basis.
- Under the new extension of Ayushman Bharat, Beneficiary aged 70 or more will be given benefits irrespective of their socio-economic status.
- Eligible beneficiary will now get new, distinct health card under Ayushman Bharat for Senior Citizens above 70 years.

Benefits Under Ayushman Bharat for Senior Citizens Above 70 years
On being enrolled under AB PM-JAY, senior citizens aged 70 or more will be eligible for following benefits.
- Medical examination, treatment and consultation – This will include medical check up by practitioners/doctors, manual diagnosis and doctor fees etc.
- Pre-hospitalization – A 3-day Pre-hospitalization care and consultancy
- Medicine and medical consumables – Facility of free medicals and medical consumables during the treatment.
- Non-intensive and intensive care services – This will include treatment needing critical care like ICU and non-ICU operations.
- Diagnostic and laboratory investigations – This will include various radiology and laboratory investigations including X-ray, MRI, CT-Scan and blood test, urine test, stool test facilities etc.
- Medical implantation services (where necessary) – This includes implantation like Pulmonary valve replacement, Double valve replacement etc.
- Accommodation Facilities – It covers accommodation charge including bed charges, sanitation charges during hospitalization period.
- Food Services – Free of cost food supplies will be ensured to patient.
- Complications arising during treatment – Any complication arising as a result of treatment will also be covered and treated.
- Post-hospitalization follow-up care up to 15 days – After getting discharged from the hospital, a patient will also receive follow up care to ensure that the patient is receiving the necessary support the healthcare services to regain their optimal health. As per the recent Extension of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, now, all senior citizens from families already availing of the health insurance cover and other eligible senior citizens under this scheme can apply for new card. The card allocated to the senior citizens will be new and distinct from the existing one. Following will be the eligibility conditions for senior citizens aged 70 years or more.
- Senior citizens from all families holding Ayushman Health Card will be eligible.
- Senior citizens already having CGHS, Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), or Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) are also eligible to apply for new card under Ayushman.
- Senior citizens having private health insurance policies or the Employees’ State Insurance scheme (ESIC) can also apply for Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance Card.
